What’s your biggest problem when YOU interact with the interviewers?

I forget the main things which I should mention during an interview and add the things which are not so much required.

It often occurs when we feel nervous from inside and consequently try to respond as quickly as possible to the interviewers. Sometimes we start to formulate answer before we comprehend the whole question.

So for the best result, listen very carefully to the question of the interviewer (Ask them to repeat in case you failed to understand it.). Listening to the question often reveals that the question has several layers and is really more than just one question. Once you fully understand the question your mind automatically creates a blueprint of the answer. Take a pause (may be for 3 seconds or so), and start answering to each phase of the question. By breaking down the questions into phases (parts) you can answer them one at a time.

By following that you won’t go beyond the limit of the question. That would make your answer precise yet complete.

I get scared and my communication skill sucks before the interviewers.

To some extent almost everyone gets nervous when they get interviewed. But this goes worse when you get so uneasy that you even fail to utter a single word, let’s forget about listening or answering to the interviewers. And that can be an issue, because sometimes it negatively affects the result of the interview. So you need to find a solution to minimize your anxiety. Try the following tips and I’m sure you will get better result.

1) Practice mock interviews with your friends. Practice a lot until you start to feel easier talking about yourself. Write down your answers for the most probable interview questions and drill.

2) Don’t think about your ‘job interview anxiety’ too much. You are not alone who is facing this problem. Many candidates feel the same.

3) Don’t visualize negative things about the forthcoming job interview. Imagine the interview going well and everyone smiling and shaking hands afterward.

4) Do some relaxation exercises the night before, when you wake up the morning of the interview, and right before the interview.

5) Try your best but don’t worry about the interview result. Because you are going to gain valuable ‘interview experience’ that will be helpful in the next interviews. So literally you have nothing to lose.

6) Always remember even the interviewers feel the pressure of selecting the right candidate.

And finally if you’re struggling with your communication skill (especially in English), then try to improve it ASAP. Communication skill is not important only for the job interviews but for your whole career.

If you want tips for better English communication skill, please let me know. I will email you.

I fail to make myself comfortable before the Interviewers. I can’t utter a single word even though I know the answer of it.

An interview room looks professional and it’s quite different from the rooms we use in our normal life. That puts extra mental pressure on jobseekers. All of a sudden we (jobseekers) discover ourselves in an alien surrounding. And that’s the only reason why you can’t answer to the questions of the interviewers (even thought you know the answers).

I suggest you to practice mock interviews with your friends and I’m sure you will feel more comfortable day by day. Try your best to give your room a professional looking (just like an interview room). It helps a lot.

Apart from that do some relaxation exercises the night before, when you wake up the morning of the interview, and right before the interview.

You must realize that the fear is only mental, and it doesn’t exist in real.

My bad English spoken English is my biggest enemy. How to improve it quickly?

There are so many tips you can find online or offline (books) to improve your English communication skill which I believe are very useful. But I’m going to recommend you something that’s beyond regular practice yet very effective.

Always remember spoken English is different from written English. What we read or write is quite different from regular spoken English (at least it should be different). So to be able to speak fluent and natural English you have to get away from the dos and don’ts of the regular English grammar rules. Don’t over stress on grammar while you are speaking in English. Just go with the flow. Don’t stop. Concentrate on your ideas that you are trying to express, not on grammar rules.

Don’t get embarrassed even if you make mistakes. Even native English speakers make grammatical mistakes, but they don’t stop. Your minor mistakes will be rectified with regular practice.

And finally I would suggest you to listen to more English discussions, conversations or may be movies. That would improve your English communication and pronunciation.

A resume without a cover says a lot of things about you, like you might not be that interested for the position, or you are too busy to perform basic job application formalities, or you are ignorant about the correct way of applying for a job. So if you truly want a job from somebody you would never send them an incomplete application, would you? I guess not.

Writing a cover-letter is not a daunting task. The first thing you got to do it to address a specific person, if you are not sure who is the concerned person is, you may call them up and ask the details. Addressing ‘Dear Sir or Madam’ should be the very last option. You also need to enquiry about the designation of the concerned person.

Start your cover letter with your brief introduction (your name, current employment status and work experience etc), followed by the exact position for which you are applying and finally how you came to know about the job vacancy. Recruiters will be eager to know the source actually, because they post job ads on various online and offline publishing mediums at a time.

Demonstrate your understanding about the company’s function and show your interest for it. Google and read through company website and you will get all these details about a company like, company history, corporate profile, function, key people, their product and services, locations etc. Perhaps, that is one of the biggest gimmicks to impress a recruiter.

Relate your past working experience with the current opening judiciously. Don’t fake your current delegations and duties, because recruiters can always carry out an inquiry. Keep your cover letter short and to the point.

After thanking the recruiter sign-off with a suitable closure, like “Sincerely”, “Yours faithfully” or “Yours sincerely”. And type your name on the next line. Make sure you have mentioned all your contact information even if it’s already in your resume. Read your cover-letter carefully or make your friend read it once before you dispatch it to the recruiter.

Remember your cover-letter should be written to a particular individual (the recruiter) and for a specific position.

Companies can be categorized into two types; Project based (of service-based companies) and Product-based companies.

Product Based companies manufacture and sell their products. For example Microsoft, Sun, Linux are product based companies. Products are defined by company itself and it’s not designed specifically for a particular user or client. It’s for the market.

On the other hand project based or service based companies sell their services to the clients. For example Wipro, TCS, Satyam, Polaris etc. Such companies strictly work based on cliental requirements and their services are specifically designed for a particular client.

Finally a company can be both product and project based. For example Wipro and Infosys

Hey, it’s Rohit here from iTechMinds.com! So how is it going? Today I feel like sharing one simple mind power trick that really worked for me.

Having good memory power is considered to be a super cool stuff. It’s certainly one feature that is capable of adding value to your overall personage. Not just your kins, friends or colleagues, but your smart memory power can make your boss or even the job interviewer a diehard fan of yours. Literally, I’m so not exaggerating!

So what is “smart memory”? It’s the ability of recollecting past happenings or records quickly without taking the help of any external source.

How can you improve your memory power? There are so many books out there written on this topic by now. In brief they all advocate good food, regular exercise, brain exercise (playing strategy games or puzzles), stress reduction etc. I’m in complete agreement with their awesome tips and advices. But today I’m going to share something that immediately worked for me.

So what exactly I did…? I instructed my brain to remember important things. (#~SOUNDS WEIRD!~#)

Memory cannot recall something which it has not recorded in the first place or recorded improperly. On most occasions failures of the recall come into this category. You don’t remember the exact date or month of joining your last employer, you don’t remember website of your previous company, you don’t remember your academic records in detail, you don’t remember what information you have written within your resume etc.

The shortcoming may be that you never noticed them in the first place or you didn’t consider it worth remembering. So how can you expect to remember something which was never recorded within your memory properly?

How to instruct your brain to remember?

Human brain is programmed to rub out unimportant information, and keep the rest. So you have to tell your brain that this information is important and you got to store it safely. By ordering your brain like that you add one virtual bookmark to it. No prizes for guessing bookmarked pages are easy to find. And now you have increased the chances of recalling that information anytime anywhere.

So give it a try. I hope this will be helpful for you.

Cheers

Why interviewers ask this question? “Tell me about yourself/ introduce yourself”

You certainly expect this question. Don’t you? You might feel like “what the …. Mr. Interviewer, don’t you get tired of asking this question? Or you have nothing better to ask?”. No matter how you react, this question has become a benchmark of almost every job interview. Simply you can’t avoid it but, surely you can prepare yourself for this routine work. Perhaps it’s a 60 seconds recap of your 10% personal (not too personal) and 45% educational & 45% professional self till date. Why that fixed 60 seconds? Because that sounds good, otherwise there is no fixed time for it. Little ups or downs are most welcome. Anyhow, what those 60 seconds should ideally be consisting of? Let’s start from where you grew up, where you went to school, your work experience so far, additional education and special training, about your present location, what you intend to do next and that’s it.

It should be a smooth going session of your high-tension interview. If all goes well it will definitely help you feel comfortable in the new surroundings both physically and mentally. Meanwhile Mr. Interviewer would be convinced that you are ready for the occasion and you know how to keep the basics right. That’s impressive!

Now what you need to avoid? Childhood incidents, details about your family or family members, your hobbies, your travel experience, your interests, likings or disliking etc.

So, get your 60 seconds’ autobiography ready as soon as possible and practice until you feel confident. You can practice before a mirror (without making funny faces). It works.

How do you make a professional email ID? First name followed by last name or vice versa? Either way it sounds pretty good and professional. But I recently came across some jobseekers’ email ids, trust me those were really disturbing as far as professional use (of it) is concerned. Professional email address is like a handshake to an employer, and certainly you can’t take it lightly. I’m not saying a good email id can win you a job or job interview, but a badly made email id can surely give employers a wrong impression about you. Interviewers or recruiters might think that you are not serious or you don’t know how to keep professional things professional. So pick something that doesn’t sound like a child made it. I understand it’s not always possible to make email ids using first name and last name combo, but you can add other words related to your profession, skill, education or anything that is not playful. For example rohitdas_ostech(at)exampleemail.com or dasrohit_du(at)exampleemail.com or rohit_mscit@exampleemail.com etc.
Avoid using words related to your company or your location because they are changeable.

Never use imaginary or playful words while making professional email ids.
Some examples of bad email ids for professional use are
vampirehunter_jobseeker(at)exampleemail.com, bravehandsome_employee(at)exampleemail.com cute_princess(at)exampleemail.com etc.

Such email ids sound amusing but not suitable for professional use. Even I do have couple of such ids, but I avoid using it for official communication. Therefore if you are using similar playful email ids within your resume, I recommend you to replace it.

Many online job applicants express their dissatisfaction over not getting enough number responses from recruiters. Honestly it’s not the fault of online job application system. It’s equally effective from every aspect of a regular method of job application. In fact more than 95% of the short-listed resumes are collected from online applications. So why is the amount of response so less for some applicants? Let’s find out.

That’s because we ignore the basics of a job application. We don’t feel the need of putting enough effort to an online job application. We never make required changes to our resume as per the job description. We don’t add a cover letter with an online job application. Even if we add it’s either just a one liner or a copy of some regularly used “cover letter sample”.

Applying for a job online is easy and fast indeed. But never make the mistake of taking it too lightly. Make sure that you follow all regular job application formalities before you hit the ‘Apply’ button.

Following are the steps of a good and sensible online job application:

Read job description properly. Apply only if your skill, experience and other required criteria matches the expectations of the recruiter. Otherwise just leave it, and wait for the next opportunity.

If you believe it’s the right job, you can move forward to the next step. And the next step is to find out the key points within the job description. It can be the skill, experience, education or location of the applicant.

Make minor changes to your resume based on the key points of the job description. You are not supposed to make huge changes, only minor adjustment and highlighting certain section within your resume is enough. Adjustments are like moving key points up so that recruiters can find that information on the first page. You can also highlight certain parts by underlining or making it bold. Do not use very rich formats like color, image etc.

Finally you need a well directed and relevant cover letter for your resume. You don’t have to create it from scratch every time. Minor changes in the body section are what you all have to do. The body of your cover letter lets the recruiter know what position you are applying for and why the recruiter should short-list you for an interview. And in the last paragraph do mention your contact number and preferred time for telephonic conversation. You can also mention your availability for the face-to-face interview. A lengthy cover letter is unlikely to be read. It’s safe to keep the limit within 250 to 500 words. Last but not least, use a font that is clear and easy to read.

You don’t have to apply for a bunch of jobs every day. One carefully sent job application worth more than 100 random quickies.

If you are willing to follow above steps before applying for an online job, I’m pretty much sure you are going to lift up the response rate.
